๐ŸŽจ Court Design Possibilities

Basic Design

Standard court with white or black lines on a solid surface. Classic and clean โ€” works for any backyard or community court.

Colored Tile Border

A contrasting color border around the court adds visual impact and definition. Easy to achieve with 1โ€“2 rows of different-colored tiles.

Custom Court Logo

Add a family crest, team logo, or custom graphic to center court using stencils or adhesive decals.

Multi-Colored Lines

Use multiple line colors for a vibrant, modern look โ€” different colors for the key, 3-point arc, and border lines.

Stenciled Graphics

Team names, mascots, or custom artwork stenciled onto the court surface using outdoor-grade paint.

3-Point Arc Accent

Paint the 3-point arc and key in a contrasting color to make them stand out and help players navigate the court.

Court Lighting

Post-mounted or overhead LED lighting extends playing hours and creates a great night-time ambiance.

Textured Surface

A textured court surface or paint provides extra traction for players โ€” especially valuable in wet conditions.

๐Ÿ›’ Sports Tile Suppliers

Sports tiles are durable, versatile, and offer excellent traction. They come in a wide range of colors and are easy to install without adhesive. Compare price, quality, warranty, and customer reviews before purchasing.

๐Ÿ€ Choosing a Basketball Hoop

For an outdoor court, the two main hoop types are portable and in-ground. Key factors: backboard size and material, adjustable height, and pole size.

Portable Hoops

Water/sand-filled base for stability. Easy to reposition. Backboards from 44"โ€“72". Adjustable height. Less expensive but less stable than in-ground.

In-Ground Hoops

Permanently installed steel pole. Superior stability and performance. Backboards 44"โ€“72" in glass, acrylic, or polycarbonate. Best for serious play.

Backboard Materials

  • Tempered glass โ€” best rebound, highest cost
  • Acrylic โ€” good performance, mid-range price
  • Polycarbonate โ€” most affordable, least rebound

Pole Size & Height

Steel poles in 3.5" or 4" (square poles are more stable). Regulation height is 10 ft. Most outdoor hoops adjust lower for younger players.

Major Manufacturers

Spalding

Wide range of portable and in-ground systems. Good options for all ages and budgets.

Lifetime

Known for durability and ease of use. Wide range of sizes and features.

Goalrilla

Heavy-duty in-ground hoops with tempered glass backboards and welded steel frames.

Silverback

Professional-grade adjustable hoops for serious players. In-ground and portable options.

Pro Dunk

Institutional-quality in-ground systems. Built to meet the highest performance standards.

๐Ÿ”จ How to Build Your Court

  1. Plan and design โ€” Decide on court size, sport type, and surface. Check local building regulations and any permits required.
  2. Prepare the ground โ€” Remove all grass, weeds, and vegetation. Ensure the ground is level and compacted.
  3. Install a base โ€” Lay crushed gravel or compacted decomposed granite as a foundation. Compact with a plate compactor.
  4. Pour cement (optional) โ€” A concrete pad provides the most durable and flat surface. Allow full cure time before laying tiles.
  5. Lay the tiles โ€” Install sport tiles over the base, aligning rows carefully. Most interlock without adhesive.
  6. Apply court tape โ€” Use court marking tape to lay out lines following the sport dimensions. Ensure lines are straight and evenly spaced.
  7. Paint the court โ€” Apply outdoor-grade sport paint. Start with the border, then fill in key areas. Allow full drying time.
  8. Finish โ€” Remove tape carefully once paint is fully dry. Install the hoop. Your court is ready to play.

Why did the basketball court go to the doctor? Because it had a foul line!

Why was the basketball court always so cool? Because it had a lot of fans!

Why did the half-court design get in trouble? Because it was a backcourt violation!

๐ŸŽฌ Choosing the Right Basketball

Once you've designed your court, make sure you have the right ball. Different sizes are appropriate for different age groups โ€” this video explains everything you need to know.

๐Ÿ‘‹ About This Tool

I have two 10-year-old twins. My son loves hockey. My daughter loves basketball. I'm building a sports court in my side yard for both of them โ€” for summers when we're not at the cottage.

My court is 22 ร— 26 ft. I already sourced the tiles โ€” used Flex Court ProSport 10ร—10 tiles from a court renovation in Toronto. This designer tool is what I built to plan it out before laying a single tile.
